Ain't Misbehavin'

Ain't Misbehavin' at the New Bern Civic Theatre

For the fall musical at the New Bern Civic Theatre, the scene design was relatively simple. The concept was to recreate the feeling of the night clubs of the Harlem Renaissance (The Cotton Club, Tin Pan Alley, etc.). Using these ideas, I wanted to create a "musical sense" in the allusion to the club scene. Using lighting as a main element in the columns and in the arches. However due to budgetary constraints and other issues, and through careful collaboration with the director and producer, those ideas had to be scaled back sufficiently, from having lighted columns to unlit, three diagonal arches to one central squared arch, and the removal of the extended platform with the addition of band stands.

Below are the rough sketches, hand draft of the original design, and an AutoCAD rendering of the floor plan and elevation of the final designs, along with photographs of the final product.
